Meet Harriet, our Binti Shupavu mentor at Mirichu secondary school.
The mixed school is in the heart of the rural Muranga. Here, the boys are boarders while the girls are day scholars. When we identified this schools, the girls were going through various challenges, having to walk over 6 kms to and from school everyday comes with its own challenges: men using free rides to lure them into unhealthy relationships, going homes to families already facing various challenges, poor performance among others.
Harriet says:
“The Binti Shupavu program is a source of inspiration and hope to scholars. The limitations of being from a rural village are progressively breaking as we shine the light of a bright future with endless possibilities of success for them. In a society where few women manage to succeed in life while the majority end up uneducated therefore depending on manual labour and sometimes men, our girls have found reasons to stay in school and work hard so as to break the cycle.
As a mentor, being part of the scholars’ journey to fulfilment gives me so much joy. I’m so happy to be a mentor at Kaganda.”
