Digital Skills for Rural Women

The Digital Skills Programme by the Centre for Women Empowerment in Technology (CWE-TECH) was established to bridge the digital divide by equipping women, girls, and youth with practical digital competencies that prepare them for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning.

About the Digital Skills Programme

The Digital Skills Programme by the Centre for Women Empowerment in Technology (CWE-TECH) was established to bridge the digital divide by equipping women, girls, and youth with practical digital competencies that prepare them for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning.

Across many communities in Kenya, thousands of young people complete school without the digital skills required in higher education or the modern workplace. Limited access to computers, internet connectivity, and quality ICT training continues to widen inequalities and restrict opportunities for personal and economic growth.

CWE-TECH believes that digital literacy is a fundamental skill for the 21st century. Through this programme, we provide accessible, practical, and inclusive technology training that empowers participants to confidently use digital tools, access information, solve problems, and create new opportunities for themselves and their communities.

Why the Digital Skills Programme?

Technology is transforming every sector—from education and healthcare to agriculture, finance, and business. Yet many young people, particularly women and those from underserved communities, are left behind due to limited access to digital education.

The Digital Skills Programme was created to ensure that every learner, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to develop the skills needed to succeed in an increasingly digital economy.

  • Students preparing for higher education
  • Young people seeking employment
  • Women returning to education or work
  • Entrepreneurs and small business owners
  • Job seekers looking to improve their competitiveness
  • Community members with little or no previous computer experience

Our Approach

CWE-TECH delivers practical, hands-on training that focuses on real-world applications rather than theory alone. Participants learn in supportive environments where they build confidence through practice, interactive exercises, and guided instruction.

We combine technical skills with problem-solving, communication, creativity, and critical thinking to ensure learners can apply technology effectively in their studies, workplaces, businesses, and everyday lives.

Where possible, learners are introduced to career pathways in technology and connected to additional learning opportunities, mentorship, and professional networks.

Our Vision & Looking Ahead

We envision digitally empowered communities where every woman, girl, and young person has the skills, confidence, and opportunities to fully participate in the digital economy.

As technology continues to evolve, CWE-TECH is committed to expanding access to quality digital education across Kenya. We aim to reach more schools, communities, and underserved populations while strengthening partnerships that create pathways to further training, employment, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Looking to the future, the programme will establish a network of Community Tech Champions who will support digital inclusion, mentor learners, and promote the responsible use of technology within their communities. We are also developing ReadyHER, a one-stop digital platform that connects women and girls to digital learning, mentorship, career guidance, entrepreneurship support, employment opportunities, and other resources that enable them to thrive in the digital economy.

Through the Digital Skills Programme, we are not simply teaching people how to use computers—we are preparing future innovators, entrepreneurs, professionals, and leaders who will drive sustainable development in their communities.

Digital skills are more than technical abilities—they are the foundation for opportunity, innovation, and a brighter future.
