Bridging the Digital Gender Divide in Rural Kenya

Access to digital technology remains sharply unequal across rural Kenya, with women and girls disproportionately excluded. Through field research conducted across Murang'a and Homa Bay counties, CWE-TECH identified the structural, cultural, and economic barriers that limit participation.
Our findings show that combining hands-on training with community mentorship produces the strongest, most durable outcomes. When women see local role models succeeding in technology, confidence and enrolment rise dramatically.
This insight continues to shape how we design programmes - prioritising safe learning spaces, childcare support, and locally relevant curricula that meet women where they are.
